BCR Events 2023-2024
BCR Tabling
On Friday, September 1st, BCR had the opportunity to table at the Student Involvement Fair. We had very high hopes going into the day, trying to surpass last year’s number of around 40 new members. We blew past that number, with over 130 new signups! We actively recruited kids who walked by our table, as many of the conservatives on campus are afraid to publicize their beliefs. We found a lot of students to be “recently converted” conservatives, who have become both dissatisfied with the Democratic Party and overall just fed up with the radical proposals that are being advanced. Many of these people just want a social environment where they can interact with like minded people and find a great group of core friends at BC. We hope to build on this momentum throughout the school year and continue to provide a conservative environment for students on campus
NEYC Conference
On Saturday, September 23rd, some of our BCR members had the opportunity to attend the New England Young Conservative Conference in Natick, MA. We had the opportunity to hear from a variety of speakers about how conservatism can make a comeback in New England, and why there is major hope for the future!
Gregory T. Angelo Event
On Wednesday, October 25th, BCR had the pleasure of welcoming New Tolerance Campaign President Gregory T. Angelo to campus. Gregory is a BC alumnus class of 2000, and thus he knows the exact situation that CRs at Boston College regarding speaker limitations and hostility from the vast majority of the student body. He talked about how when he attended Boston College, Patrick Buchanan had the opportunity to talk to the school and it largely went on without protest, whereas now, he wouldn’t even be allowed on campus. He talked about how he initially pushed for corporations to support marriage equality in the early 2010s in hopes of passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, but in the past five years has seen the major error in that decisions. Instead of only supporting marriage equality or non-discrimination, corporations have now weighed in on major culture war issues ranging from abortion, to BLM, to environmental issues, not in the name of financial gain but in political and social acumen. Corporations are not upholding their fiduciary duty but instead taking political stances that are extremely divisive and controversial. His new organization, the New Tolerance Campaign, utilizes grassroots activism and the “call your senator” model, to hold CEOs and Corporations accountable when they stray from their stated missions and neutral positions. Gregory also talked about his time in the Trump Administration in the Office of Drug Control Policy, and how despite the major successes the administration had on the drug epidemic facing this country, the media would rarely give any credit. The issue was largely ignored or portrayed in a negative light, despite the fact that the issue of decreasing drug overdoses and deaths should not have any controversy whatsoever. Overall, we really appreciated Gregory coming back to his Alma Mater and giving us great insight into the world of lobbying, the Executive Branch, and his current work at NTC. It was a great event for our club, and look forward to continued success throughout the rest of the year!
Lindsey O'Rourke Event
On Monday November 20th, BCR had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Lindsey A. O’Rourke to talk about the current Russo-Ukraine conflict. Professor O’Rourke has focused her research primarily on the Cold War and U.S.-U.S.S.R. relations. She pursued her doctorate under the esteemed foreign policy author John Mearsheimer, and is extremely well-versed in much of 20th century international politics. Professor O’Rourke offered a unique perspective on the conflict, highlighting how the U.S. has continually expanded NATO since the 1990s, despite perceived assurances against expansion. She also highlighted the different policy positions among the GOP candidates, ranging from the more Neoconservative voices seek more financial support in Ukraine with Nikki Haley and Chris Christie, to the more skeptical candidates in former President Trump and Vivek Ramaswamy. Overall, it was a great event and we are very appreciative of Professor O’Rourke for taking the time to speak to us.
Jay Nordlinger Event
On Wednesday, November 29th, BCR had the pleasure of welcoming Jay Nordlinger to campus! He discussed the history of National Review and the legacy of William F. Buckley. National Review had a profound impact on the conservative movement throughout the latter half of the 20th century, and William F. Buckley was the architect behind that form of conservatism.
Caroline Downey Event
On Thursday, November 30th, BCR had the pleasure of welcoming Caroline Downey to campus. Carolina graduated BC in 2020, and has since worked at National Review as a journalist covering many of the major cultural issues facing our society. She talked to the club about her work at National Review as well as her time at BC and how it solidified her conservative opinions as truthful. Thank you to Caroline Downey for coming back to your alma mater!
